Jorge Rey

Jorge Rey is a Professor and Director at the Florida Medical Entomology Laboratory (FMEL), part of the University of Florida. His research focuses on wetlands ecology, mosquito biology, and biological control strategies. He holds a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from Florida State University (1979), along with an M.S. (1977) and B.S. (1973) from Florida State and the University of Miami, respectively.

Rey's work addresses the ecological impacts of human activities on coastal wetlands, particularly mosquito control strategies. His research combines field studies, lab experiments, and GIS analysis to evaluate environmental consequences of impounding marshes and explore biological alternatives to pesticides. Key projects include testing copepod species (e.g., Macrocyclops albidus) as natural mosquito predators and investigating habitat preferences of disease vectors like Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus.

He teaches courses on mosquito biology and ecological principles, emphasizing integrated pest management. Current research includes container mosquito ecology, non-target effects of pesticides like Dibrom, and biological control efficacy in urban and rural settings. Rey’s contributions bridge environmental science and public health, promoting sustainable solutions for pest management challenges.
