About
Jorge Pedrosa is a Full Professor and Senior Researcher at the Life and Health Sciences Research Institute (ICVS), affiliated with the School of Medicine at the University of Minho. He holds leadership roles as President of the Portuguese Society of Microbiology (SPM) and President of B.ACIS (Tech transfer office, UMinho), while coordinating the InflammaSignal Research Team and serving on the Direction Board of the Clinical Academic Center 2CA– Braga Hospital and the Scientific Council of the Lusófona Platform for Clinical Research and Biomedical Innovation.
He earned a degree in Pathologic Anatomy (1986), a Biochemistry degree (1994), and a PhD in Biomedical Sciences (2000).
His research focuses on immunological mechanisms against mycobacterial infections, particularly Mycobacterium ulcerans (Buruli ulcer) and Mycobacterium tuberculosis (tuberculosis). Key areas include host immune response modulation, drug delivery systems for antimicrobial agents, and the role of neutrophils in tuberculosis. He pioneered studies on M. ulcerans environmental isolation, host inflammatory response characterization, and its intracellular growth mechanisms.
Current projects led by Pedrosa explore phage therapy for bacterial infections and clinical applications of extracellular vesicles in metabolic diseases. As a collaborator, he investigates immunogenetic and immunometabolic factors influencing Buruli ulcer susceptibility. His work spans basic research in BSL3 labs and clinical networks across Europe and Africa.
