Jonathan Schofer

Jonathan Schofer is an Associate Professor in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Texas at Austin's College of Liberal Arts. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago and has affiliations with the Schustermann Center for Jewish Studies and the Thomas Jefferson Center for the Study of Core Texts and Ideas. He serves on the Graduate Studies Committee of Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures.

His research focuses on classical rabbinic Judaism, emphasizing intersections between law, ethics, and theology in late antique Jewish sources. Current projects include manuscripts analyzing Mishnaic purity law and midrashic interpretations of biblical law.

Notable recognition includes the 2008 Jordan Schnitzer Book Award for his first monograph. He co-chairs the Midrash Section of the Society of Biblical Literature and teaches courses spanning Jewish civilization, religious theory, comparative ethics, and biblical interpretation.
