About
Jonathan Pritchard is the Bing Professor of Population Studies and Professor in the Departments of Biology and Genetics at Stanford University. He holds a BSc in Biology and Mathematics from Penn State University (1994) and a PhD in Biology from Stanford (1998). His postdoctoral research included work at Oxford University's Department of Statistics and a faculty position at the University of Chicago before returning to Stanford in 2013. His research focuses on developing statistical and computational methods to study genetic variation, population structure, and evolutionary processes. Key interests include the genetic basis of complex traits, gene regulation, and the application of genomic data to understand human evolution and disease.
His lab, the Pritchard Lab, collaborates across disciplines to address questions in population and evolutionary genomics, including the development of tools like structure for analyzing population genetic data. Notable contributions include the 'omnigenic model' explaining pervasive genetic effects on complex traits and studies on ancient DNA to trace human migration patterns. Pritchard has mentored numerous students and postdocs who have gone on to prominent academic and industry roles.
His work is supported by grants from institutions such as the National Institutes of Health and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. The lab is actively involved in training the next generation of computational biologists and geneticists, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to solve challenging problems in genomics.
