Jonathan Pinckney is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Texas at Dallas, School of Economic, Political and Policy Sciences. His research focuses on nonviolent resistance, democratization, and peacebuilding. Before joining UT Dallas, he held roles at The Horizons Project, US Institute of Peace, and institutions like PRIO and the Sie Cheou-Kang Center. He earned a PhD in International Relations from the University of Denver's Josef Korbel School in 2018, along with notable fellowships.
Education: PhD (2018), MA (2014), BA (2008) in International Studies from Gordon College. His research has been published in top journals like Perspectives on Politics and Journal of Conflict Resolution. His book From Dissent to Democracy (Oxford UP, 2020) examines civil resistance transitions. Awards include the Sie Fellowship (2012) and the International Center on Nonviolent Conflict’s PhD Fellowship (2016).
Research highlights include analyzing protest effectiveness, democratic backsliding, and the role of civil society. He has led projects on forecasting dissent and dataset development (e.g., ARC and NAVCO 3.0). Teaching focuses on peace studies, nonviolent resistance, and international relations.
