Jonathan Moorman, MD, PhD, FACP is a Professor and Vice Chair of Research and Scholarship at East Tennessee State University's Quillen College of Medicine, leading the Department of Internal Medicine's Research Committee. He holds dual appointments in the Infectious, Inflammatory and Immunologic Disease Department and the broader Internal Medicine division.
Dr. Moorman completed his MD at the University of Virginia School of Medicine (1991), followed by a PhD in Microbiology (2003). He trained in Internal Medicine residency (1991–1994) and Infectious Diseases fellowship (1994–1997) at UVA Health Sciences Center. Board-certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases since 1994 and 1997 respectively, he became an American College of Physicians Fellow in 2009.
His research focuses on viral immune evasion mechanisms, particularly hepatitis C core protein's role in immune signaling, HIV/HCV coinfection dynamics, and tropical infectious diseases. Over 70 peer-reviewed articles and multiple book chapters highlight his work on T cell dysfunction in chronic viral infections, myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs), and biomarkers of HIV-associated comorbidities.
Recent studies explore CRISPR-based HBV cure strategies, SARS-CoV-2 T cell memory, and pharmacogenetic predictors of opioid use disorder. He leads projects on VA SHIELD biorepository initiatives and veterans' infectious disease outcomes, with a focus on Appalachian healthcare disparities in HIV/HCV care.
Dr. Moorman's awards include the ACP Fellowship and recognition for contributions to the Infectious Diseases Society of America, American Association of Immunologists, and American Society for Microbiology. His clinical interests span critical care infectious diseases, antimicrobial stewardship, and translational immunology.
