Jonathan Lanman is Professor of Cognitive Anthropology at Queen's University Belfast and Assistant Director of the Institute of Cognition & Culture. His interdisciplinary research examines religion, atheism, and morality through cognitive and evolutionary frameworks. Lanman co-leads the £2.3m 'Understanding Unbelief' project and directs the 'Explaining Atheism' programme, investigating global secularization patterns.
Research examines:
- Cognitive foundations of religious/unbelief systems
- Ritual's role in group cohesion and conflict
- Moral psychology across belief systems
- Cross-cultural secularization drivers
Honors include presidency of the International Association for Cognitive and Evolutionary Sciences of Religion and distinguished fellowships.
