Dr. Jonathan Howlett is a Senior Lecturer in Chinese and Colonial History at the University of York. He co-founded York's Asia Research Group and serves as Regional Coordinator for East Asia. His research examines decolonization in China, Sino-British relations, and Shanghai's social history.
Education includes: BA and MA (Bristol), MPhil (Oxford), PhD (Bristol).
His current project analyzes decolonization's impact on ordinary people in Shanghai (1949-1976). Research spans political takeovers of British companies, ideological texts like Liu Shaoqi's How to be a Good Communist, and propaganda production.
Awards: Senior Fellow of Higher Education Academy (2020 teaching award), Fellow of Royal Historical Society, elected council member of British Association for Chinese Studies (2013-2016).
International collaborations include visiting scholarships at Chinese University of Hong Kong, Fudan University, and Zhejiang University.
