Jonathan Grabowski

Jonathan Grabowski is a Professor of Marine and Environmental Sciences at Northeastern University, affiliated with the Civil and Environmental Engineering department and a Center Member of The Plastics Center. His research focuses on ecology, fisheries, conservation biology, social-ecological systems, and ecological economics. He holds a B.S. in Biology & Economics from Duke University and a Ph.D. in Ecology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His work examines habitat restoration, fisheries management, and the socioeconomic impacts of environmental policies.

Research Interests: Dr. Grabowski’s lab investigates the dynamics of marine ecosystems, including oyster reefs, seagrass beds, and kelp forests, while addressing issues like fisheries sustainability, climate change impacts, and coastal community perceptions. Projects include quantifying the value of ecosystem services, mapping seafloor habitats, and analyzing the effects of fishing gear modifications on habitats.

Awards: He has received the Antarctic Service Award from NSF and the Stifel Faculty Fellowship. His research has also been recognized in the Stanford University Annual Assessment of Author Citations (2022, 2023, 2024), ranking him among the top 2% of cited scientists globally.

Grants & Projects: He leads initiatives such as NOAA-funded studies on shellfish aquaculture perceptions and the socioeconomic impacts of black sea bass range shifts. His lab integrates ecological and social sciences to improve coastal management strategies and community resilience.
