Jonathan Engel is the Matthew Mason/Phi Delta Theta Distinguished Professor and Associate Chair in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He holds a BS from MIT (1981) and a PhD from Yale (1986), with postdoctoral research at Caltech and the Bartol Research Institute. His research focuses on nuclear theory, particularly neutrino physics, CP violation, and nucleosynthesis, with applications to particle physics and astrophysics. He teaches courses like PHYS/COMP 447: Introduction to Quantum Computing. His group studies double-beta decay, r-process nucleosynthesis, and CP violation in nuclei, collaborating with experimental groups at TUNL. He advises graduate students Qunqun Liu, David Stilwell, and Matthew Dai. His work bridges theory and experiment, advancing fundamental physics through nuclear structure studies and interdisciplinary collaborations.
