Jonathan Elmer is a Professor of English at Indiana University Bloomington, affiliated with the College of Arts & Sciences. He holds a BA from Yale University (1982) and a Ph.D. from the University of California (1990). His research focuses on American literature and culture, transatlantic studies, race and sovereignty, and literary theory. He has authored three books, including In Poe's Wake (2024) and On Lingering and Being Last (2008), and published essays analyzing works by Poe, Melville, and others, alongside interdisciplinary studies on legal theory and cultural critique. Elmer has held leadership roles, including Chair of the English Department (2009–2012) and Director of the College Arts and Humanities Institute since 2012. He co-founded the Center for Theoretical Inquiry in the Humanities and Platform, a Mellon-funded arts and humanities research lab. His public humanities work includes serving as Artistic Director of the Chicago Humanities Festival (2015–2017). Elmer has lectured globally and is an accomplished jazz trombonist.
