Jonathan Dowell, M.D., is a Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center and serves as Chief of Hematology/Oncology at the Dallas VA Medical Center. His clinical expertise centers on thoracic malignancies, including non-small cell and small cell lung cancers, mesothelioma, and thymoma.
Dr. Dowell's educational background includes a bachelor's degree in neuroscience from Amherst College (magna cum laude), a medical degree from the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine, internal medicine residency at UT Southwestern Medical Center, and a fellowship in hematology and oncology at Vanderbilt University.
His research focuses on thoracic malignancies with over 40 peer-reviewed publications spanning clinical trials for mesothelioma and lung cancer, risk factor analysis for thrombosis in cancer patients, and investigations into chemotherapy administration patterns and patient consent in clinical research. Recent work addresses therapeutic advances in small-cell lung cancer and biomarker-driven treatment approaches.
Dr. Dowell chairs the Simmons Cancer Center Data and Safety Monitoring Committee and co-chairs both the Dallas VA Transfusion Utilization Committee and the Veterans Integrated Service Network 17 Hematology/Oncology Work Group.
He is an active member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Hematology, the Texas Medical Association, and the Dallas County Medical Society.
