Indiana University BloomingtonAbout
Jonathan D. Raff is an Associate Professor at the O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs, Indiana University Bloomington, with an adjunct appointment in the Chemistry Department. He holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Science (2007) from Indiana University and completed an NSF Postdoctoral Fellowship at UC-Irvine.
- Education: Ph.D. (IU, 2007), M.S. (University of Minnesota, 2001), A.B. (Occidental College, 1998)
His research focuses on thermal and photochemical reactions on environmental surfaces (soil, aerosols, snow, urban infrastructure) influencing air pollution, human health, and climate. He employs advanced spectroscopy and mass spectrometry in lab and field studies.
Research trends include nitrogen oxides cycling, environmental surface chemistry, and pollutant transformation mechanisms. His work on "self-cleaning" materials challenges their efficacy and environmental impact.
- Scientific Awards:
- NSF CAREER Award (2014)
- DOE Early Career Award (2015)
- O'Neill Teaching Award (2012, 2013)
Raff directs the Raff Laboratory and the Ph.D. Program in Environmental Science. His publications span journals like Environmental Science & Technology and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
