Jonathan Cohen

Dr. Jonathan Cohen is a Professor at the Center for Human Nutrition at UT Southwestern, where he has worked since completing his postdoctoral studies. His research focuses on the genetic basis of metabolic disorders, particularly those contributing to common diseases like heart disease and fatty liver disease. Collaborating with Dr. Helen Hobbs, he has identified key genes involved in lipid metabolism and elucidated their roles in disease prevention.

Their laboratory discovered loss-of-function mutations in PCSK9 that lower cholesterol and protect against coronary heart disease, as well as the first genetic cause of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in humans.
