Jonathan Bruning is a Professor and Chair of the Communication and Digital Media Department at Carthage College. He joined the faculty in 1999 and holds a Ph.D. in Communication Studies from the University of Kansas, alongside degrees from Bowling Green State University and Gustavus Adolphus College. Beyond academia, he has professional experience in television news and sports production, and currently serves as a contributing editor at Soccer Stadium Digest.
His research and teaching focus on sports media, film studies, digital technology, political communication, and intercultural communication. He has organized over a dozen international study tours to Europe, including J-Term programs in Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Holland, and England, as well as a semester abroad at Oxford University.
Beyond the classroom, Bruning is the faculty mentor and play-by-play announcer for Carthage women’s soccer, and advises the Lambda Pi Eta honor society chapter. His recent op-ed in the Kenosha News (June 2019) explored the cultural impact of U.S. women’s soccer.
