Jonathan Bender

Jonathan Bender is a Professor of Engineering and Director of the Margaret Jones Wyllie ’45 Engineering Program at Sweet Briar College. His work focuses on nanotribology, energy transition, and engineering education. He holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Virginia and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Delaware.

Research Interests: Dr. Bender investigates friction at micro/nanoscales, lubrication science, and the transition to renewable energy systems. His studies explore applications from transportation efficiency to biomimetic systems (e.g., cricket chirping mechanisms). He emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to solving global energy challenges.

Teaching: Courses include ENGR 120 (Foundations of Engineering Analysis), ENGR 451-453 (Capstone series), bridging theoretical knowledge with real-world engineering practice.
