About
Dr. Jon Silas serves as Associate Professor in Psychology at Middlesex University's Faculty of Science and Technology, where he co-leads the Jones, Silas & Ward Lab. His cognitive neuroscience research examines perception-action coupling, olfactory processing, and social cognition using EEG, TMS, tDCS and fMRI methodologies.
He completed his PhD at University of Roehampton on mirror neuron systems in social cognition, followed by postdoctoral research on olfaction at University of Pennsylvania. Current research explores temporal prediction effects on memory, spatial attention modulation through electrical stimulation, and the intersection of neuroscience with performance studies.
Research integrates experimental paradigms with neuroimaging techniques to investigate cognitive mechanisms. Recent registered reports examine null effects of neuromodulation techniques, advancing methodological rigor in cognitive neuroscience. Collaborative work with dance practitioners explores embodied activism through Capoeira, bridging scientific and artistic inquiry.
Publications demonstrate methodological innovation including development of MAIA-2 interoceptive awareness scale, plus investigations into how technical language shapes health decision-making during the COVID-19 pandemic. Research consistently addresses reproducibility through preregistered designs.
Dr. Silas teaches cognitive/biological psychology and neuroscience methods, directs the Cognitive and Clinical Neuroscience MSc program, and supervises doctoral students. He serves as Director of Programmes for psychology curriculum development.
