About
Jon R Konradsen is an Associate Professor and research group leader at Karolinska Institutet, specializing in pediatric asthma and allergy research. He serves as Section Head of Pediatric Allergy and Pulmonary Medicine at Astrid Lindgren's Children's Hospital and is a Clinical Researcher for the Stockholm Region. As Principal Investigator for the pediatric cohort in the Swedish National Airway Register (SNAR), he leads multiple research initiatives focused on improving diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of childhood respiratory conditions.
His educational background includes:
- 2001: Medical degree
- 2003: Registered physician
- 2009: Specialist in Pediatrics
- 2012: Doctor of Medicine in Pediatrics, Karolinska Institutet
- 2013: Specialist in Neonatal Medicine
- 2016: Specialist in Child and Adolescent Allergology
Konradsen's research centers on understanding why some children develop persistent and severe asthma, how care can be improved, and what role inflammatory biomarkers and molecular allergy diagnostics can have in pediatric asthma management. His work spans molecular diagnostics, early intervention strategies, and epidemiological studies using national registry data to characterize childhood asthma patterns and treatment outcomes across Sweden.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on molecular allergy diagnostics, asthma prediction models, and innovative interventions like early-life peanut oral immunotherapy. The research shows increasing integration of molecular techniques with clinical outcomes, particularly in understanding how specific biomarkers correlate with asthma control and how early interventions might alter disease trajectories in predisposed children.
His scientific recognition includes:
- Great Researcher Award from the Swedish Society of Allergology (2021)
- Best thesis award in allergy from the Consul Th C Berghs Foundation (2013)
Konradsen has mentored numerous doctoral students through completion of their theses, serving as main or associate supervisor for projects related to pediatric asthma, allergy diagnostics, and molecular mechanisms of respiratory disease. His research is supported by multiple funding sources including The Swedish Heart and Lung Foundation, The Swedish Asthma and Allergy Association, and KI/SLL Research and Development.
He leads the research group 'Diagnostics and treatment of children with asthma and allergy: from molecular diagnostics to intervention' which conducts several major studies including the INSTAR trial (preventing asthma with corticosteroids), the Madog study (long-term follow-up of children with respiratory distress), and the SmaChO study (peanut oral immunotherapy for young children).
