Jon Merritt

Jon Merritt is an Adjunct Instructor in the Department of History at the University of Alabama. He holds a PhD (2017) and MA (2008) from the University of Alabama, and a BA from Valdosta State University. His research focuses on United States History, with particular emphasis on the Korean War and broader themes in military and social history. He teaches courses on Western Civilization and American Civilization, including honors tracks.

His research interests include military history, civil rights movements, and the intersection of war and society. He has published reviews on topics such as the Amistad Rebellion, Black freedom struggles in the U.S. military, and the legacy of white supremacy in South Carolina. His work bridges national and regional histories, emphasizing transformative periods like the World Wars and the Civil Rights era.
