Jon Comer is a Professor of Geography at Oklahoma State University (OSU) since 2008, with prior roles as Associate Professor (1999–2008) and Assistant Professor (1994–1999). He holds a PhD in Geography from The Ohio State University (1994) and has been at OSU since 1994, initially hired as an Economic Geographer. As of 2023, he serves as Interim Head and later Head (2024–2027) of the Geography Department.
His research focuses on spatial statistics, communication technology, and urban economics. Notable projects include studies on sports stadium location patterns, transportation impacts, aviation issues (e.g., pilot shortages, radio frequency overlaps), and drone ownership. Recent work examines health outcomes, obesity trends, and political geography patterns in the U.S.
Teaching includes spatial statistics, world regional geography, and courses on Europe. He previously taught Meteorology. Comer has secured grants from the Oklahoma Transportation Center and led projects on highway impacts and socioeconomic analysis. He holds awards such as the Regents Distinguished Teaching Award (2008) and AAG peer-review roles. His service includes editorial roles and program assessment certifications.
