Jon Coaffee is a Professor of Urban Geography and Deputy Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research) at the University of Warwick, within the Faculty of Social Sciences. He leads the Midlands Graduate School (ESRC Doctoral Training Partnership) and directs the Warwick Institute for the Science of Cities (WISC). His research focuses on urban resilience, security, and disaster management, integrating physical and socio-political dimensions of city functioning. He collaborates with public, private, and third-sector stakeholders to ensure impactful research.
Coaffee holds leadership roles in UK and international research initiatives, including the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Urban Science and Progress and the Leverhulme Trust TRANSFORM Programme. He is an Exchange Professor at NYU’s Center for Urban Science and Progress (CUSP) and advises EU and UN policy groups on urban security and disaster recovery.
His publications span urban resilience theory, terrorism risk, climate change impacts, and Olympic city sustainability, with monographs such as *Urban Resilience: Planning for Risk* (2016) and *The War on Terror and Urban Security* (2021). His work is supported by grants from EU and UK Research Councils.
Coaffee supervises PhD students in urban security, political geography, and disaster management. His research emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, bridging geography, political science, and urban planning to address global challenges.
