Jon Bullock

Jon Bullock is an Assistant Professor of Ethnomusicology at the University of Notre Dame. His research focuses on Kurdish music, sound technologies, and colonial power dynamics in 20th-21st century Iraq. He holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in Music from the University of Chicago (2022 and 20XX).

Research interests span Kurdish musical practices, Middle Eastern sacred music traditions, decolonial theory, and radio/media studies. His work interrogates how recording, broadcasting, and colonial policies shape cultural expression. Recent publications include contributions to Essays on Modern Kurdish Literature, world of music, and the International Association for the Study of Popular Music journal.

Presentation history includes conferences such as the Society for Ethnomusicology and Middle East Studies Association. His scholarly approach integrates ethnographic fieldwork with critical theoretical frameworks to examine auditory colonialism and decolonial praxis.
