Prof. Dr. Jon Albers is a Professor of Classical Archaeology at Ruhr University Bochum (since 2020), specializing in ancient Mediterranean settlements and landscapes. He previously served as Acting Chair of Classical Archaeology at Ruhr University (2018-2020) and held visiting professorships at Free University of Berlin (2016, 2018). His academic career includes roles as Senior Academic Councillor (2015-2018) and Academic Councillor (2009-2015) at the University of Bonn. Albers holds a habilitation (2015) and venia legendi in Classical Archaeology from the University of Bonn, with a thesis on Etruscan sanctuaries, and a PhD (2009) from the University of Bern focusing on the Roman Campus Martius.
Research interests span Roman, Greek, and Etruscan architecture; ancient urban development; pre-Roman Italian cultures; and architectural terracottas. Current projects include studies on Paestum’s forum temple, Selinus’s harbors, and Western Greek ports. He also explores historical knowledge mediation in film (collaboration with TU Dresden).
Past projects include work on Etruscan sanctuaries, Cerveteri’s necropolis, and the Pantheon in Rome. Albers is affiliated with the Leibniz Graduate School RITaK and has contributed to initiatives like the DISCO study and Pons project. Office hours are held via Zoom on Thursdays 2–4 PM.
