About
Dr Johnny Lo is a Senior Lecturer in Mathematics and Statistics at the School of Science, Edith Cowan University (ECU). He serves as Director of HDR Programs and co-leads the Mathematical Applications and Data Analytics (MADA) research group. Professionally, he is a member of the Statistical Society of Australia (SSA).
Dr Lo holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Spatial Sciences (2012) and dual Bachelor of Science degrees in Mathematics (1st Class Honours) and Mathematical Sciences (2002), all from Curtin University of Technology.
His research spans interdisciplinary domains including
- Statistical modeling and machine learning
- Health and nutrition data analytics
- Marine ecosystem monitoring via data science
- Neurodegenerative disease biomarker analysis
- Food security and public health policy
- Geostatistical applications in ecology
Recent publications demonstrate methodological expertise in time series analysis (Australian housing prices), biostatistical modeling (retinal atrophy rates), nutrition epidemiology (Paleolithic diet impacts), and ecological forecasting (seagrass-dugong interactions). His work frequently employs Bayesian hierarchical models, spatiotemporal analytics, and clinical data interpretation.
Dr Lo actively supervises PhD candidates in projects such as
- Laser acupuncture for musculoskeletal disorders
- Bayesian modeling of housing markets
- Diet-gut microbiome interactions
- Recreational fisheries management
Major research grants include
- $4,010,000 Department of Primary Industries & Regional Development grant (2020-2029) for recreational fishing surveys
- $1,167,284 Cancer Research Trust grant (2024-2029) for melanoma immunotherapy
- $272,249 WA Marine Science Project (2022-2027) on marine heatwaves
His methodological work intersects with applied health studies on autism spectrum disorders, remote worker mental health, and prediabetes interventions, using both traditional statistical methods and cutting-edge AI approaches.
