John Thompson is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Cornell University. Since 2012, he has been a partner in PetraScience Consultants Inc., a Vancouver-based firm focused on exploration, mining, and sustainability. From 2013 to 2018, he held the endowed Wold Professorship of Environmental Balance for Human Sustainability at Cornell. With over 35 years of experience in the mining industry and related research, Thompson has served in leadership roles at organizations such as Teck Resources, Genome BC, the World Economic Forum, and the Canada Mining Innovation Council. He also serves on the boards of several exploration, technology, and venture capital firms, as well as non-profits dedicated to resources and sustainability.
His research interests emphasize sustainable mining practices, environmental balance in resource extraction, and the integration of earth science with societal needs. Thompson actively engages with industries seeking earth science expertise and advocates for public outreach to enhance awareness of earth science's societal value.
