About
John T. Waterhouse was a Lecturer and the first Director of the John T. Waterhouse Herbarium at the University of New South Wales. He joined the School of Botany in 1962 and played a pivotal role in establishing the herbarium as an internationally recognized institution. He secured its registration in Index Herbariorum in 1981, cementing its global academic standing. His contributions laid the groundwork for the herbarium's current role in research and teaching, focusing on biodiversity, plant systematics, and environmental studies.
The Herbarium, named in his honor posthumously following his death in 1983, houses over 61,000 specimens and supports research in molecular systematics, biogeography, and land management. It remains a critical resource for ecological and taxonomic studies, reflecting Waterhouse's legacy in botanical science.
