About
Professor John Smillie is a Professor of Mathematics at the Mathematics Institute, University of Warwick. His research focuses on Dynamical Systems and Complex Dynamics, particularly in higher dimensions, with emphasis on translation surfaces and ergodic theory. He has contributed to studies on horocycle flows, parabolic bifurcations, and hyperbolicity in complex systems.
Teaching: Recent courses include MA4M7 Complex Dynamics, MA424 Dynamical Systems, and MA475 Riemann Surfaces. He also leads the TCC Course on Polygonal Billiards.
Research Highlights: Collaborative work with M. Bainbridge, B. Weiss, E. Bedford, and others explores advanced topics like moduli spaces of translation surfaces, quasi-hyperbolicity in polynomial diffeomorphisms, and parameter space analysis. Current submitted works investigate tremors in moduli spaces and ergodic measures in Abelian differential strata.
Affiliations: Office B1.21, contact via J.Smillie@warwick.ac.uk. Active in Warwick's Mathematics Institute and international collaborations in dynamical systems research.
