John Shannon

Professor John Shannon is a Professorial Research Fellow at the University of Surrey’s School of Electronics and Physical Sciences, affiliated with the Advanced Technology Institute. He holds a DSc from Brunel University London (1982) and has extensive experience in semiconductor device research. His career includes leading research groups at Philips Research Laboratories (1985–1994) and pioneering innovations like the Source-Gated Transistor.

His research focuses on semiconductor physics, nanotechnology, and large-area electronics, with notable contributions to low-noise diodes and pico-amp circuits. He has over 100 publications and 70 patents, including foundational work recognized by the Paterson Prize (1983) and Royal Academy of Engineering Fellowship (2001).

Recent publications highlight advancements in amorphous carbon materials and field emission display technologies, emphasizing interdisciplinary applications in nanoelectronics. His work bridges fundamental material science with practical engineering solutions for next-generation electronic systems.
