John R Shook is an Associate Professor in the Department of History and Government at Bowie State University, where he teaches philosophy. He received his PhD in Philosophy from the University at Buffalo SUNY and has previously taught at Oklahoma State University and the University at Buffalo. Additionally, he has held positions as Affiliate Faculty in the PhD program at Union Institute & University, Visiting Fellow at the Institute for Philosophy and Public Policy at George Mason University, and Associate Fellow at the Center for Neurotechnology Studies in the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies.
His research focuses on American intellectual history, philosophical naturalism, political philosophy, humanist ethics, cosmopolitanism, and philosophy of religion. Dr. Shook has authored and edited over a dozen books and numerous academic journal articles. Key works include Dewey’s Empirical Theory of Knowledge and Reality (2000), Pragmatic Naturalism and Realism (2003), and Blackwell Companion to Pragmatism (2005), demonstrating sustained contributions to pragmatism, Dewey studies, and the history of American philosophy.
