John Osburg is Associate Professor and Chair of Anthropology at the University of Rochester, focusing on market economies, cultural values, and morality in contemporary China. His research examines elite networks, changing gender relations, and the emergence of new spiritual practices among urban Chinese populations.
Education: PhD from University of Chicago (2008).
Research Interests: Explores intersections of capitalism, gender, corruption, and religious revival in post-socialist China, with emphasis on ethical transformations in consumer culture and spirituality.
Publications: Work focuses on Chinese elite networks, Buddhist revival, and moral economies, with recent emphasis on luxury consumption's role in spiritual practices.
