Albany Medical CollegeAbout
John Moustakas is an Associate Professor and Department Chair in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at Siena University (formerly Siena College). He joined as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in 2012, received tenure and promotion to Associate Professor in 2018, and assumed the Department Chair role in 2019. Prior to Siena, he completed postdoctoral fellowships at New York University and UC San Diego.
- Ph.D. in Astronomy, University of Arizona (2006)
- M.S. in Astronomy, University of Arizona
- B.A. in Physics & Astrophysics, University of California, Berkeley (2000)
His research focuses on observational cosmology and galaxy evolution across cosmic time. Using Hubble Space Telescope and ground-based observatories, he investigates star formation histories, galaxy cluster dynamics, and the roles of dark matter and dark energy. He integrates data science methodologies to analyze multi-wavelength datasets spanning ultraviolet to mid-infrared wavelengths.
Analysis of his 2014 publications reveals concentrated work on galaxy clusters through the CLASH and PRIMUS surveys, featuring gravitational lensing techniques to study high-redshift galaxies. Key themes include spectral energy distribution modeling, photometric redshift refinement, and cosmic star formation rate measurements, demonstrating interdisciplinary approaches bridging astrophysics and computational statistics.
Dr. Moustakas teaches calculus-based physics and advanced astrophysics courses, employing active learning techniques including peer instruction and collaborative problem-solving. He emphasizes building meaningful student relationships through classroom engagement and extracurricular research opportunities, particularly valuing Siena's close-knit academic environment.
