John Mitchell

John Mitchell is a Professor of Communications Systems Engineering and Head of the Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering at University College London (UCL). He also serves as Co-Director of the UCL Centre for Engineering Education and has held leadership roles such as Vice-Dean for Education in the Faculty of Engineering Sciences (2015-2022). Mitchell earned his B.Eng. and Ph.D. in Electronic and Electrical Engineering from UCL (1996 and 2000, respectively), followed by roles as a Research Fellow, Lecturer, and Senior Lecturer. He holds certifications including Chartered Engineer status, Fellow of the IET, and Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

His research focuses on communications engineering, electrical engineering, and engineering education, particularly curriculum development, interdisciplinary learning, and sustainable practices. He pioneered initiatives like the Integrated Engineering Programme (IEP) and contributed to Project-Based Learning (PBL) integration in UCL's curriculum. Mitchell's leadership in global engineering education is recognized through awards like the Leonardo Da Vinci Medal (2024) and National Teaching Fellow (2024).
