John McCarthy

John McCarthy is a Professor in the Department of Applied Psychology at University College Cork, Ireland, leading the People and Technology Group (PAT). The group focuses on experience-centred and participatory design of digital technologies to enhance lived experiences and ensure inclusive design practices.

Research Interests:

• Development of dementia-friendly research communities through co-design with people living with dementia and their carers.
• Analysis of digital publics and counter-publics in civic engagement contexts, including dementia care and sustainable energy advocacy.
• Philosophical exploration of participation’s politics and aesthetics in HCI.

Affiliations:

• Member of ACM SIGCHI and Chapter Officer of the Irish SIGCHI Chapter.
• Theme Chair for ACM DIS, General Co-Chair of Irish HCI, and Editorial Board member for Interacting with Computers.
