About
John Marsham is the Met Office Joint-Chair at the University of Leeds, leading the Leeds component of the Met Office Academic Partnership (MOAP). He is a member of the Institute for Climate and Atmospheric Science (ICAS) within the School of Earth and Environment and holds affiliations with Water@Leeds and the National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS). His role involves strategic leadership in atmospheric science research and academic collaboration.
Education:
- PhD, Meteorology, University of Edinburgh (2003)
- MPhys, Physics, 1st class honours, University of Edinburgh (1999)
Research focuses on tropical meteorology, atmospheric convection, climate change impacts (especially in Africa and Asia), and dust-climate interactions. His work bridges process studies with weather/climate modeling improvements to address environmental challenges. Core themes include monsoon dynamics, convective systems, and land-atmosphere feedbacks.
Awards and Honors:
- Royal Meteorological Society's L.F. Richardson Prize (2009)
- European Meteorological Society's Young Scientist Award (2010)
Advising and Grants:
- Supervises 6+ PhD students and 10+ postdoctoral researchers across projects like EUREC4A, HyCRISTAL, and DACCIWA
- Leads £10M+ in funded projects (e.g., GCRF Africa SWIFT, IMPALA, Newton Fund partnerships)
Leads the Atmospheric and Cloud Dynamics research group and collaborates globally on field campaigns (e.g., Fennec Saharan climate project). Manages the University of Leeds Met Office Strategic (LUMOS) Research Group.
