John Lowengrub is a Chancellor's Professor of Mathematics at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), with cross-appointments in Biomedical Engineering and Chemical Engineering and Materials Science. He holds a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the Courant Institute (1988) and a B.A. in Mathematics from Cornell University (1985). His research focuses on applied and computational mathematics, with emphasis on tumor growth modeling, microstructured materials, and fluid dynamics.
Lowengrub's work bridges mathematical theory, numerical methods, and applications in biology and materials science. Key contributions include phase-field models for tumor growth, adaptive numerical algorithms for free-boundary problems, and studies of crystal growth and nanomaterials. He has received honors such as the Julian Cole Lectureship (2014) and the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Fostering Undergraduate Research (2008).
Research interests span computational oncology, multiscale modeling of cancer, and fluid-structure interactions. His lab collaborates with engineers, biologists, and clinicians to develop predictive models of tumor progression, drug delivery, and material self-assembly. Notable projects include modeling glioblastoma invasion using physics-informed neural networks and simulating elastic fingering in reactive fluids.
