John Irwin is Professor and Chair of the Department of Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering Technology at Michigan Technological University, where he also serves as Director of the Research and Innovation in STEAM Education Institute (RISE). He holds an Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from Wayne State University, M.S. in Occupational Education from Ferris State University, and AAS/BS in Mechanical Design Engineering Technology.
His technical expertise spans jig/fixture design, environmental simulation chambers for transportation systems, 3D printing technologies, and manufacturing workcell simulations. Research applies problem-based learning methods to CAD/CAM, parametric modeling, and product development.
Educational leadership:
- PI for NSF-funded Engineering Technology Scholars program improving student retention
- Developed Michigan Learning and Education Advancement Program (MiLEAP) industry training
- Secured multiple grants for CTE Mechatronics programs
Professional memberships include Society of Manufacturing Engineers, ATMAE, and ASEE Engineering Technology Division.
