John L. Bixby, Ph.D., is Vice Provost for Research and Professor of Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology and Neurological Surgery at the University of Miami. A distinguished scientist with over 140 co-authored publications and NSF/NIH-funded studies, he joined UM in 1988 as Assistant Professor. Previously, he served as Senior Associate Dean for Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, Director of the UM Neuroscience Center, and Founding Director of the Ph.D. Programs in Biomedical Sciences (PIBS).
His research focuses on identifying genes and signaling networks that promote or hinder axon regeneration following spinal cord injury through collaborations with Vance Lemmon, Ph.D., the Walter G. Ross Distinguished Chair in Developmental Neuroscience. Dr. Bixby holds a Bachelor’s degree from Cornell University (1975) and a Ph.D. in Neurobiology from Caltech (1980), with postdoctoral fellowships at UC San Diego and UC San Francisco.
