John J. Dougherty serves as a Lecturer in the Department of Ethnic Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, and holds a Senior Fellowship in Comparative Ethnic Studies. Previously, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Stanford University and faculty in History and Environmental Studies at Reed College.
He earned his Ph.D. from UC Berkeley in 2014, where he was a University of California Dissertation Fellow and affiliated scholar with the Institute for the Study of Social Issues, Joseph A. Myers Center for Research on Native American Issues, and Center for Race & Gender.
His research centers on Native American legal and environmental history, particularly treaty rights and resource governance in the Pacific Northwest. His forthcoming book Flooded by Progress: Law, Natural Resources and Native Rights in the Postwar Pacific Northwest (University of Washington Press) examines 20th-century conflicts over indigenous lands, while his teaching spans courses on racial theory, indigenous activism, and environmental change.
