About
John Inge Johnsen is a Principal Researcher and Docent (Associate Professor) at Karolinska Institutet, working within the Department of Women's and Children's Health, specifically in Pediatric Oncology and Pediatric Surgery. He leads the Per Kogner and John Inge Johnsen research group, which focuses on childhood neural tumors, particularly medulloblastoma and neuroblastoma.
Dr. Johnsen received his PhD from the University of Tromsø, Norway in 1994 under the supervision of Professor Terje Traavik, with his thesis focusing on polyomaviruses. After completing his PhD, he pursued cancer biology research at the University of California, Irvine in Professor Eric Stanbridge's lab, studying p53 and its effects on cancer development. He later joined Professor Per Kogner's research group at Karolinska Institutet as a postdoctoral fellow, where he helped build the childhood neural tumor research consortium. He became an Associate Professor at Karolinska Institutet in 2010.
His research focuses on identifying new treatment options for children with medulloblastoma and neuroblastoma to improve survival rates, reduce treatment-related complications, and enhance quality of life. His group applies various Omic techniques to characterize the molecular landscape of malignant and non-cancerous cells within the tumor microenvironment. They use translational approaches with preclinical in vivo models to identify drugs targeting specific biological aberrations in cancer cells.
The research group has published extensively on childhood neural tumors, with recent work focusing on genomic analysis, single-cell transcriptomics, tumor microenvironment characterization, and drug discovery. Their publications reveal a strong emphasis on understanding tumor heterogeneity, cancer stem cells, and molecular pathways driving tumor progression.
Dr. Johnsen has secured significant research funding, including grants from Barncancerfonden and the Swedish Cancer Society for projects titled 'New treatment options for childhood neural tumors' and 'Identifying and overcoming mechanisms of treatment resistance in patients with neuroblastoma.'
His work demonstrates a commitment to translational research that bridges basic science discoveries with clinical applications, aiming to develop more effective therapies for children with challenging neural tumors.
