John Hess is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of English at the University of Massachusetts Boston. He has been actively involved in international teaching engagements, including being the first UMass Boston faculty member to teach at the Beijing Information, Science, and Technology University (BISTU) in May–June 2014. Since 2013, he has taught six times at Shaanxi Normal University’s Summer Graduate School in Xi’an, China, where he delivered courses on topics such as slavery in America during the 2014 session.
