John Harris is an Associate Professor in the Department of History and Classics at the University of Alberta. He holds a PhD in Classical Philology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), an MA and BA from the University of Manitoba. His research focuses on Plato's dialogues, Greek comedy/tragedy, and the Socratic tradition. Current projects include co-editing a special journal edition on Socrates' trial and writing a monograph on Socrates' execution.

Research interests combine textual analysis of Plato’s early works with interdisciplinary exploration of Greek cultural narratives. Notable collaborations include work with Kathrin Koslicki (Philosophy Dept) on Socratic themes.
Teaching spans Greek mythology, ancient languages, and advanced prose studies. Recent courses include Greek and Roman Mythology, Beginner's Greek, and specialized prose seminars.
Past experiences include archaeological fieldwork at the Palatine East Excavations (1990) and a fellowship at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens (1994–1995).
