About
John G. Strang, M.D. is a Professor (Part-Time) in the Department of Imaging Sciences at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. He is affiliated with UR Medicine Faculty, which consists of over 900 specialist and primary care providers spanning 19 departments, and Accountable Health Partners, a network of over 2,000 community and UR medical faculty. Dr. Strang is certified in Diagnostic Radiology by the American Board of Radiology and is not currently accepting new patients.
Dr. Strang completed his medical education at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in 1988, followed by an internship and residency in Diagnostic Radiology at Harbor/UCLA Medical Center (1988-1993), and a fellowship at Stanford University Medical Center (1993-1995).
With over twenty-five years of experience in radiology, Dr. Strang specializes in medical imaging technologies, particularly focusing on ultrasound, elastography, and image-guided interventions. His research interests span multiple areas including:
- Prostate cancer detection and characterization using imaging techniques
- Brachytherapy planning and delivery methods
- Robotic assistance in medical procedures
- Tissue elasticity properties as cancer biomarkers
- Needle insertion techniques and force measurement
- Viscoelastic properties of human tissues
Dr. Strang's body of work demonstrates a strong focus on improving diagnostic accuracy and treatment efficacy in oncology through advanced imaging technologies. His research has particularly emphasized prostate cancer detection, developing techniques to characterize tissue properties that can serve as biomarkers for malignancy. He has also made significant contributions to the field of brachytherapy, exploring robotic assistance, needle insertion techniques, and treatment planning optimization.
Among his notable achievements are several prestigious awards including:
- Alpha Omega Alpha (1988)
- Beta Gamma Sigma (2013)
- Cum Laude for Scientific Exhibit (1999)
- General Electric Fellowship, MIT
- Tau Beta Pi and Eta Kappa Nu engineering honorary societies, MIT (1984)
Dr. Strang has contributed significantly to medical literature with numerous journal articles and book chapters, particularly in the areas of CT imaging, ultrasound technology, and prostate cancer treatment. His collaborative work often involves interdisciplinary teams combining expertise in radiology, urology, biomedical engineering, and oncology to develop innovative diagnostic and treatment approaches.
