John Evelev

John Evelev is a Professor of English at the University of Missouri’s College of Arts and Science. His research focuses on mid-19th century American literature and cultural theory, particularly how literary works shaped modern social and environmental ideas. He holds a PhD from Duke University (1995) and an A.B. from Bowdoin College (1987). Evelev’s work examines themes of class, professionalism, and environmental aesthetics in antebellum America, with notable publications like Picturesque Literature and the Transformation of the American Landscape (2021) and Tolerable Entertainment: Herman Melville and Professionalism in Antebellum New York (2006).

His research has been supported by prestigious fellowships including the Botein Fellowship (American Antiquarian Society), Research Board Fellowship (University of Missouri), and Summer Fellowship (National Endowment for the Humanities). Current projects explore Poe and Willis’s redefinition of literary professionalism in antebellum New York.
