John Debs

Associate Professor John Debs is a member of the ANU College of Systems & Society, affiliated with the Physics Education Centre at The Australian National University. He holds a PhD in Physics and a B.Sc in Nanotechnology. As founder and Director of the ANU MakerSpace, he promotes hands-on learning through interdisciplinary innovation. His research focuses on Ultra Cold Atomic Physics and pioneering physics education methods, exemplified by his nationally recognized 'Foundations of Physics' course.

Dr. Debs has led projects like the 'Virtual Realities for Physics and STEM Education' initiative (2018–2020) and the ANU MakerSpace (2015). His work bridges quantum physics with pedagogical innovation, earning awards such as the 2017 Australian Teaching Excellence Award and 2022 AIP Education Medal. Current efforts include advancing quantum sensors and VR applications in education.
