John DeCarlo is a Professor and Director of the Master's Program in Criminal Justice at the University of New Haven's Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences. He previously served as a police officer for 34 years, including six years as Chief of the Branford Police Department. His research focuses on police contagion shootings, racial profiling, community policing, environmental criminology, and police management. He co-leads a $1.5M NSF grant studying racial profiling and has authored/co-authored three books and numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals. His work includes examining eyewitness accuracy, police unions' impact on innovation, and the role of environmental factors in crime. He founded the Center for Advanced Policing and co-founded NexGen Solutions, Inc. He holds a Ph.D. from the City University of New York Graduate Center and has been widely featured in media for his expertise on policing issues.
