Professor John Danesh is a distinguished academic at the University of Cambridge, serving as Professor of Epidemiology and Medicine and Head of the Department of Public Health and Primary Care since 2001. He directs the British Heart Foundation's Cardiovascular Epidemiology Unit and leads the Health Data Research UK Cambridge Hub, a consortium comprising the Wellcome Sanger Institute, EMBL-EBI, the University of Cambridge, and its hospitals. His work integrates cardiovascular epidemiology with genomic research to understand disease mechanisms and improve prediction and treatment.
John Danesh's research focuses on discovery genomics and cardiovascular genetics, therapeutic target prioritization, international vascular health, screening and risk prediction, systems genomics, and blood donor health. His work has pioneered integrative population approaches to understand coronary heart disease, demonstrating causal roles for interleukin-6 signaling, IL-1 signaling, and triglyceride-mediated pathways. He has led major international collaborations including the Emerging Risk Factors Collaboration (2.5 million participants) and the EPIC-CVD consortium (520,000 participants).
Danesh's research portfolio shows a strong emphasis on large-scale genomic and epidemiological studies. His recent work explores genetic determinants of cardiovascular disease, metabolic biomarkers, risk prediction models, and population health in diverse settings including South Asia. His team utilizes innovative approaches like Mendelian randomization and systems genomics to uncover causal relationships and potential therapeutic targets.
- Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences
- NIHR Senior Investigator
- British Heart Foundation Professorship
- European Research Council Advanced Investigator Award
- Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health, London
- Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London
Professor Danesh has been instrumental in creating major bioresources that benefit both UK and international research communities, including the 50,000-participant INTERVAL study, the 30,000-participant COMPARE study, and large-scale studies in Bangladesh and Pakistan recruiting over 100,000 participants. His leadership in "team science" has fostered international collaborations involving hundreds of researchers across dozens of countries.
As Director of HDR UK Cambridge, Danesh leads initiatives that combine cardiovascular epidemiology with genomic research to understand disease at a deeper biological level. His work aims to improve prediction of disease onset and progression, enable tailored medicines for disease subtypes, and predict patient responses to treatments.
