About
Professor John Connelly is Professor of Bioengineering at Queen Mary University of London's Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, where he leads a multidisciplinary research team at the Blizard Institute's Centre for Cell Biology and Cutaneous Research. He holds a B.S. in Biological and Environmental Engineering from Cornell University (2002), a Ph.D. in Bioengineering from Georgia Institute of Technology (2007), and completed postdoctoral training at the University of Cambridge under Prof. Fiona Watt.
Research Focus: His laboratory investigates mechanical signaling in skin biology with emphasis on:
- Biophysical regulation of nuclear architecture and epidermal fate decisions
- Keratin cytoskeleton dynamics in mechanotransduction
- 3D bioprinting for advanced skin disease modeling
- Matrix mechanics in scarring and ageing pathologies
Publication Trends: Recent work demonstrates consistent focus on keratinocyte mechanobiology, cytoskeletal regulation, and development of engineered platforms (micropatterning, 3D bioprinting) to study nuclear mechanotransduction and skin pathophysiology.
Academic Leadership:
- Academic Lead for CREATE Biofabrication Lab
- Co-Course Director for MSc Regenerative Medicine
- Module Lead for ICM7143
- Lecturer for BMD116
- Supervisor of 4 postgraduate students
