About
Professor John Carr is a faculty member at the University of Cambridge within the Department of Plant Sciences and affiliated with the School of Biological Sciences. His research focuses on plant-virus interactions, particularly how viruses subvert plant resistance mechanisms and manipulate interactions with pests/pollinators. He teaches across the Natural Sciences Tripos and leads the Virology and Molecular Plant Pathology Group.
Key research themes include:
- Viral manipulation of plant-insect vector dynamics
- Salicylic acid and jasmonate signaling pathways
- Inositol phosphate-regulated resistance networks
- Climate-resilient crop protection strategies
- Africa-focused sustainable agriculture collaborations
Scientific recognition:
- Fellow of the Linnean Society
- Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology
His group employs molecular virology, behavioral assays, and field-based approaches to combat crop viruses in sub-Saharan Africa, with funding from BBSRC, DFID, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and DBT India. Contact: jpc1005@cam.ac.uk
