John C Calvert is a Professor in the Department of History at Creighton University and a leading scholar on radical Islamism and Middle East history. His academic appointments and research focus on the ideological genealogy of Al Qaeda, Pan-Islamic militancy, and the political cultures of Egypt and Algeria.

Professor Calvert has received international acclaim for his book Sayyid Qutb and the Origins of Radical Islamism, including recognition by Atlantic Monthly and Foreign Policy. He has also served as a consultant to B'huth Media and Consultancy Services in Dubai (2006-2010) and provided expert analysis for the Center for Constitutional Rights on Algerian Islamist movements (2009).
