John Bates

John Bates is a Senior Lecturer at Northumbria Law School, part of Northumbria University. He holds an LLB (Hons) from the University of Leicester and a Legal Practice Course qualification from the College of Law, York. A qualified solicitor since 1997 and former Partner in a regional law firm specializing in civil dispute resolution and clinical negligence, he transitioned to academia in 2008. His teaching focuses on Tort Law, Civil Dispute Resolution, Clinical Negligence, and the intersection of AI/Robotics with Law.

As Programme Leader for LL.B (Hons) Law with Business and International Business, Bates has contributed to curriculum development across multiple legal programmes. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, emphasizing his commitment to pedagogical excellence. His research interests span Tort Law adaptation to emerging technologies, access to justice in litigation reforms, and legal challenges posed by artificial intelligence.

Bates actively participates in professional networks such as the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers and North of England Medico-Legal Society. His recent scholarly work addresses driverless car liability, ODR innovations, and social media's role in fraud detection. He has presented at conferences including the Socio-Legal Studies Association and BILETA, and peer-reviewed for Taylor & Francis and Edward Elgar.
